Dr. James Vincent Patten is a research fellow at Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software. As a member of the Trustworthy, Responsible, and Efficient Engineering of Software (TREES) group he engages in research and development of techniques and tools to support software clone detection in large-scale codebases. He is also engaged in research to investigate applications of evolutionary algorithms (EA)s, in coordination with large language models (LLM)s, to generate high-quality synthetic data that supports a range of activities, such as the training of supervised learning algorithms or enhancing privacy in technologies.
He is also involved in promoting and supporting research and initiatives that help widen access to STEM education and career opportunities, with a particular focus on inclusivity and diversity. Accordingly, he was part of the Lero team which managed the Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing and Design (WiSTEM2D) scholarship programme, run in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson.
He holds a PhD in Machine Learning and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship, both from the University of Limerick.
